One of the great pleasures of owning a home in Kalkan is the climate. This corner of Turkey enjoys a classic Mediterranean pattern — long, hot, reliably dry summers and mild, green winters — with more than 300 days of sunshine a year. Here is what to expect month by month, and when the season really gets going.
When is the summer season?
The main season runs roughly from late April/May to late October. July and August are the peak — hot, busy and glorious — while the shoulder months of May, June, September and October are, for many owners, the very best time to be here: warm sea, comfortable temperatures and a more relaxed town.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is beautiful. The hillsides are green and full of wildflowers, and daytime temperatures climb from the high teens in March to the mid-20s Celsius by May. It is perfect walking weather for the Lycian Way, and by late May the sea has warmed enough for the first proper swims. Restaurants and beach clubs are opening up, but the crowds have not yet arrived.
Summer (June to August)
This is Kalkan at full tilt. June is warm and settled, in the high 20s to low 30s. July and August are hot — regularly 33–38°C, occasionally higher — with warm evenings that are made for rooftop dining, and almost no rain at all. The sea is at its warmest, around 27–28°C, like stepping into a bath. This is where a private pool and a shaded, sea-facing terrace earn their keep; homes are designed here to catch the breeze and provide cool, shady retreats from the midday sun.
Autumn (September to November)
Ask a Kalkan regular for their favourite month and many will say September or October. The fierce heat softens to a very pleasant high-20s, the sea stays warm well into October, and the light turns golden. It is arguably the finest time to visit. By November the season winds down, days cool into the low 20s, and the first rains return to green everything up again.
Winter (December to February)
Kalkan does not close for winter, but it does slow down and turn peaceful. Days are mild — often 12–16°C and sunny — while nights are cooler and most of the year's rain falls in short, heavy bursts. The hills go lush and green, the almond blossom appears in February, and the town belongs to its residents again. Many owners love a quiet winter visit; others let their homes over summer and enjoy them in the shoulder seasons. Because winters are mild rather than cold, homes here are built for shade and airflow, though many have air conditioning and heating for year-round comfort.
Planning around the seasons
If you are buying to let, the summer and shoulder months are where the rental income is concentrated, so a home that is comfortable in the heat — good shade, a pool, cross-ventilation, air conditioning — will always perform better. If you are buying mainly for yourselves, do not overlook spring and autumn: for sheer quality of life, they are Kalkan at its best.
