It is the question we are asked most often by first-time buyers, and it deserves an honest answer: Kalkan is a remarkably safe, calm and welcoming place to own a home. For many owners, that sense of security is one of the main reasons they choose it.
A genuinely low-crime town
Kalkan is a small community where people know one another, and serious crime is rare. Violent crime is very uncommon, and the kind of petty theft you might guard against in a big city is unusual here. Visitors and owners routinely describe walking home late from a harbourside dinner and feeling completely at ease. As anywhere, common sense applies — but the overwhelming experience of living here is one of safety.
A warm, hospitable culture
Turkish culture places enormous value on hospitality, and nowhere is that clearer than in a small coastal town. You will be offered tea more times than you can count, remembered at your favourite restaurant, and helped by neighbours without a second thought. Kalkan has a large, settled international community — British, Irish, Dutch, German and more — alongside the Turkish families who have lived here for generations, and the two blend easily. English is widely spoken in the town, which makes settling in gentle.
Fitting in and everyday etiquette
You do not need to change who you are to be happy here, but a little cultural awareness goes a long way. Learning a few words of Turkish — merhaba (hello), teşekkürler (thank you) — is warmly received. Turkey is a secular country with a Muslim heritage; Kalkan is very relaxed and cosmopolitan, but dressing modestly when visiting a mosque or a village away from the resort is appreciated. Respect for elders, for hospitality and for the call to prayer as part of daily life will only endear you to your neighbours.
Healthcare and practicalities
Modern private hospitals in Antalya and Fethiye offer excellent, affordable care, and there are good local clinics and pharmacies for day-to-day needs. Pharmacists are knowledgeable and can help with minor ailments. Many owners take out private health insurance, which is inexpensive by UK standards. Everyday infrastructure — reliable utilities, fast internet, well-stocked shops and supermarkets — is better than newcomers often expect.
A community, not just a resort
Perhaps the most reassuring thing for new owners is that Kalkan functions as a real community year-round, not merely a summer playground. There are quiz nights and charity events, walking groups and boat trips, book clubs and coffee mornings. People look out for one another and for each other's homes over the winter. It is very easy to arrive as a stranger and, within a season or two, feel like you belong. That warmth — as much as the sunshine and the sea — is what makes Kalkan feel like home.
